Where in the world is Carmen Moll?

~ 01 June 2006 ~

In grade school people used to think it was funny to call me Carmen. I never understood why. Okay, fine. Ha ha. Carmen. Hilarious.

Yet, here I am refering to myself as such. It must come only with good reason. And it certainly does: After 8 wonderful years in state of Utah, the Moll family is leaving. Gone. Home sold.

Care to venture a guess where we’re headed? Road trip begins in just a few hours.

Heads Up

If I’ve been slow to respond to your mail recently or am slow to respond in the next few days, now you know why. If I’m just slow in general, that’s due to a horrible trampoline accident as a child attempting death-defying stuntery. Thanks for the patience, and I’ll respond as soon as I’m able.

New Orleans? I hear places are cheap there these days.

7   june ~ 01 June 2006 at 07:04 AM

Well, if you really want to make a full circle with your post title…I’d guess San Diego.

8   balex ~ 01 June 2006 at 07:12 AM

9   Greg ~ 01 June 2006 at 07:16 AM

Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair;

Blessings to you and your family wherever you are going.

12   Joshua Steimle ~ 01 June 2006 at 08:00 AM

Word on the street is Florida…

13   MattLat ~ 01 June 2006 at 08:01 AM

Madison, Wisconsin? :D

(In gradeschool people used to call me Marsha…)

14   Josh Byers ~ 01 June 2006 at 08:04 AM

Iowa? No really, it’s nice here…

15   Mike Stickel ~ 01 June 2006 at 08:12 AM

Just to throw something different out there, South Carolina or Georgia.

16   bennion ~ 01 June 2006 at 08:15 AM

i think josh is right. florida. i vaguely remember talking about grad. school in florida back in the day… yeah, changing my guess to florida too.

17   Adam Schilling ~ 01 June 2006 at 08:17 AM

Road trip? Hmm … definitely Australia. ;-)

18   Terry Tolleson ~ 01 June 2006 at 08:19 AM

I have no idea… erm… Austin

19   Hugh ~ 01 June 2006 at 08:22 AM

Jackson County, Missouri.

;-D

20   Kevin Tamura ~ 01 June 2006 at 08:28 AM

Hmm, I would like to say Seattle but I’ll go with Cupertino.

21   Tyson Tune ~ 01 June 2006 at 08:42 AM

Nashville? C’mon, it’ll be cool. I’ll take you honky-tonking.

22   Josh ~ 01 June 2006 at 08:44 AM

Waldorf, MD - I wouldn’t wish that on anyone!

23   J.D. ~ 01 June 2006 at 08:54 AM

San Diego … “Where in the world is Carmen San Diego?”

24   Emile ~ 01 June 2006 at 09:02 AM

First bet: Cupertino

;-)

25   Chris Peterson ~ 01 June 2006 at 09:05 AM

Maryland. Why?

I think there are some clients there that would make a good match …

But … what better way to have chosen your destination than the specialty license plate contest winner!

26   Kristian Walker ~ 01 June 2006 at 09:13 AM

That would be wierd if you and I ended up switching places-I move to Utah, you move to Michigan. I still owe you lunch, so you’ll have to send a forwarding address!

Congrats & Good Luck.

27   Joshua Kendall ~ 01 June 2006 at 09:27 AM

My guess is the East Coast. More specifically PA or MD.

28   Matthew Reinbold ~ 01 June 2006 at 09:32 AM

Redmond, WA? They could probably use you. ;)

It’s a shame we here in Utah have to loose such a talent. However, I’m sure whereever you end up you’ll be doing some great, high-profile work. I’m glad we snagged you for a presentation for our SLCFUG when we did. :D

Best of luck and I look forward to the revealing of the new diggs.

29   Seth ~ 01 June 2006 at 09:47 AM

Dang it, I was going to guess Missouri as well. I’ll put my two bits on South Carolina…

30   fondue ~ 01 June 2006 at 09:51 AM

i think that J.D. is right, its gotta be San Diego.

although, i should stress how great the design world is here in denver, colorado. and how can you beat those mountains so close to the office??!! road trip it here my friend.

31   Ray ~ 01 June 2006 at 09:58 AM

Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada

32   Joshua Brewer ~ 01 June 2006 at 10:19 AM

Add another vote for San Diego, not because of the reference, but because it would be sweet to have someone of your caliber in the hood.

But I am secretly thinking a HQ that rhymes with kerplapple.

33   Richard Parsons ~ 01 June 2006 at 10:39 AM

Little Rock, Arkansas. Well, probably not, but I thought everyone could use a good laugh.

34   Chris Harrison ~ 01 June 2006 at 10:43 AM

I’ll venture to guess, you’re heading to the wonderful world of Google to work alongside Doug Bowman.

35   John Cade ~ 01 June 2006 at 10:53 AM

Perhaps Apple made an offer you can no longer refuse?

36   Jim ~ 01 June 2006 at 11:02 AM

1.You have been selected for the next Survivor reality show wherein 16 computer geeks must spend a month on a tropical island without a computer or pizza. The group soon separates with designers on one team and coders on the other. Both groups suffer, however, as the designers can’t decide on the color scheme for their “buff” and the coders struggle to name their tribe using just the letters cssxml. Your magnetic personality soon captures the entire nation and you move to Chicago to become Oprah’s replacement.

2.Having rejected the Apple possibility, you are moving to Redmond to design “canned” layouts for FrontPage 2010. You become disenchanted when you learn that Gates is insisting on designs using only tables, image slices and plenty of font tags. You couldn’t pass up the job security as the project will most certainly be delayed well past the time when your kids get their post graduate degrees.

Godspeed to the Moll family and your new adventure.

37   Chris Griffin ~ 01 June 2006 at 11:02 AM

Florida is a nice place to visit, but I would never go back there to live. West coast is the best coast.

Apple offered you a lot more money and you have changed your mind. You are going to Cupertino!

38   Marc ~ 01 June 2006 at 11:41 AM

Well.. At least googling for ‘Carmen Moll’ leads to the UK… ;)

39   Greg ~ 01 June 2006 at 11:55 AM

Sorry Cameron, I can’t resist. Richard, you’re very close.

40   Hugh ~ 01 June 2006 at 12:00 PM

Memphis or Dallas?

41   Cameron Fleming ~ 01 June 2006 at 12:06 PM

I still get Carmen all the time. Also Kevin. And then there are the myriad variations of spellings that people seem to come up with…

It’s hard being a Cameron.

42   Miko W. ~ 01 June 2006 at 12:29 PM

“Where in the world is Cameron Sandiego?”

43   Jason Frostholm ~ 01 June 2006 at 12:36 PM

Bentonville, Arkansas. Walmart truly does rule the world. Much to my chagrin.

44   Jerrett ~ 01 June 2006 at 12:50 PM

I think Apple bought your soul for 10 shilling. Cupertino.

45   Adam Spooner ~ 01 June 2006 at 01:32 PM

Cupertino, San Jose, or the San Francisco Bay Area…

Will we see an Apple disclaimer soon? =)

46   Ty Hatch ~ 01 June 2006 at 02:06 PM

Hiram finally decided to bring you on staff… ;)

47   Andrew ~ 01 June 2006 at 02:53 PM

I have to laugh at some of these guesses - especially the Jackson, County one. (Funny…not accurate).

I helped Cameron pack last night and he’ll be sorely missed ‘round these parts.

Good luck in your trip/move, Cameron.

48   gb ~ 01 June 2006 at 02:58 PM

Being a utah based designer I have something to say: I cannot blame you. (I’m probably moving to the great state of WA later this year)

49   Claudiu Ciodaru ~ 01 June 2006 at 04:00 PM

Perhaps…Minneapolis?!

Aren’t people aware that Claudia is a female name? The male version ends in either “-us” , “u” or “-o” ex: Claudiu, Claudius, or Claudio, just to name a few. But never does it ends in - “Claudia”. Stop calling me Claudia!

Hey Cameron, a safe and happy move for you and your family.

50   Clifton ~ 01 June 2006 at 04:20 PM

Utah’s not that bad. We finally have an Apple store and they’re building a couple more freeways. But the snow has got to stop. Sheesh.

I get Cameron’s going to Florida. Probably wants to live closer to family. I bet he’s still freelancing.

51   Douglas ~ 01 June 2006 at 04:31 PM

Swindon!

52   Angie ~ 01 June 2006 at 04:49 PM

Oh, you Americans. *grin* Not a single one of you even suggested it might be out of the country. Why not Toronto? Vancouver? Or perhaps they’re even going over, you know, that BIG body of water. :)

53   Pedro ~ 01 June 2006 at 04:52 PM

Baghdad. I hear they’re looking for a few good men, or at least a full-time designer.

54   alain ~ 01 June 2006 at 05:57 PM

Well, let’s see. Moll sounds German-ish. But that’s too obvious. So where else do they speak German-ish? The Principality of Leichtenstein! You’re going to be the Royal Designer for the prince!

Will you get a title, like Earl or Baron? How about Count Cameron?

55   John Beales ~ 01 June 2006 at 06:21 PM

I think you’re looking for some solitude and openness for inspiration: Coppermine, Northwest Territories ;)

56   Jon Linczak ~ 01 June 2006 at 07:00 PM

If you are near my neck of the woods (and who is? come on, it’s ohio for crying out loud) you owe me a visit… :) Have a safe trip.

57   Dave Anderson ~ 01 June 2006 at 09:05 PM

Idaho? I dunno.

58   Eric G ~ 01 June 2006 at 09:35 PM

can’t be California guys, it too expensive to live there for one person—let alone a guy with 12 kids!

59   Dan Bachman ~ 01 June 2006 at 10:05 PM

Nauvoo :)

60   justin ~ 02 June 2006 at 12:24 AM

You’re headed to the Great White North???

How about Vancouver, BC? The weather is really nice out there.

61   Veerle Pieters ~ 02 June 2006 at 05:35 AM

Belgium ;o)

62   Zoe ~ 02 June 2006 at 07:13 AM

Ha, Nauvoo, good guess. I’m guessing Chapel Hill, North Carolina, just because that’s where I want you to come. You’d fit right into the Chapel Hill 2nd Ward!

63   Andy B ~ 02 June 2006 at 07:19 AM

Alaska!

64   Damian ~ 02 June 2006 at 07:57 AM

Austin! We need more talent and less hacks. :)

65   erat ~ 02 June 2006 at 08:25 AM

Well, I’m sure it isn’t Colorado City…

How’s about Memphis?

66   Kyle Talbott ~ 02 June 2006 at 08:54 AM

OK. He’s moving to Brooklyn.

He’s subletting my bedroom (comes with a bath) and my wife and I are moving into the kid’s bdrm. Mr. & Mr. Moll are having 3 bunk beds delivered to our apt so that they can rack and stack the kids… Mr & Mrs. Moll will be sleeping on the bottom bunk, in a full size bed (cramped, I know) next to the AC.

He looks like he’s going to be a good subletter but with all the kids, I hope the mngmnt company doesn’t catch on.

OK. We are teaming up to create an uber-cool boutique design firm with diverse interests.

We are looking for 2 maverick programers and a print production designer.

All inquiries can be made here.

67   Kim Siever ~ 02 June 2006 at 09:21 AM

I’ll jump on the Cupertino bandwagon as well.

68   Nick M ~ 02 June 2006 at 09:58 AM

Cameron, there are a couple of houses for sale in the neighborhood here once you decide to move back.

2 days into hurricane season and nothing yet. That’s good.

69   Caleb ~ 02 June 2006 at 12:09 PM

Tulsa? Home of Carman

70   Drew ~ 02 June 2006 at 12:39 PM

Driving overnight to make a surprise guest appearance at ‘An Event Apart Chicago’, only to announce the even bigger surprise that he is now a permanent resident of our fair city.

71   BigA ~ 02 June 2006 at 12:59 PM

You must have heard how I moved from the US to London and now you want in on the action.

72   Dan ~ 02 June 2006 at 02:16 PM

I hope you know that the you and the wife and kids are always welcome in Chicago!

73   Croaky ~ 02 June 2006 at 02:34 PM

Tijuana, Mexico.

74   Michael ~ 02 June 2006 at 02:37 PM

Columbia, South Carolina :)

75   Jeff ~ 02 June 2006 at 02:39 PM

Why MOLine of course!

76   Carl Peterson ~ 02 June 2006 at 03:18 PM

It would be cool if it were Dallas. That’s my first guess.

Or maybe Oklahoma City. Why? I don’t know.

Or maybe Missouri to work at the Big Noob.

77   Thomas M. ~ 02 June 2006 at 03:41 PM

Nah … the Noobs have moved to Boston to work at Purevolume … so not to Mizzery …

Maybe Lawrence, KS to work with Jeff Croft and the guys at World Online …

Drat. There goes my shot at moving back to KU.

78   paul ~ 02 June 2006 at 05:06 PM

Well you’ve been working with Jason Santa Maria, so maybe your joining up with HappyCog?

79   BigA ~ 02 June 2006 at 05:44 PM

Well you’ve been working with Jason Santa Maria, so maybe your joining up with HappyCog?

Can’t be. Al Gore has recently proven that such a concentration of talent would completely eliminate the polar ice caps.

80   Maria ~ 02 June 2006 at 08:14 PM

Gotta be a Hispanic town going east, but man! Florida? You get crazy curly hair there!

81   Brennen Florey ~ 02 June 2006 at 10:12 PM

My prediction (And Cameron, you know I have no prior knowledge of this), is that you’re moving to San Diego and joining the good team at Joyent.

By the way, I’ll be at @media next week in London. We should have a pint!

82   Hugh ~ 02 June 2006 at 11:37 PM

A pint? That’s a good one.

83   Marko Mihelcic ~ 03 June 2006 at 03:47 AM

Bunsville , Idaho :D

84   John Cade ~ 03 June 2006 at 06:27 AM

Sounds like a few people are pretty sure of Florida. Boca Raton?

85   Richard Parsons ~ 03 June 2006 at 01:26 PM

Ok my new guesses are all in Arkansas again:
Ozark,
Mountain Home,
Clarksville,
Russellville,
or
Fort Smith.

Say what does the winner of this contest get :) I’m so needy for freebies…

86   Paul M ~ 03 June 2006 at 05:03 PM

Adios Cameron. Springville wasn’t really concidered Utah was it…

87   Leonardo ~ 04 June 2006 at 02:27 AM

Florida! Just one step closer to Belize. Muhahahaha, muhahahaha!

88   Lucian ~ 04 June 2006 at 11:41 AM

I’m secretly hoping you’ll come over to Singapore, but it’s a heck of a long boatride if you’re hopping on a car headed to the port.

St. Louis, Misery. I take Greg’s hint seriously (never a good thing to do, I know).

89   James / AkaXakA ~ 04 June 2006 at 04:04 PM

Canada!

90   Michael Kraabel ~ 05 June 2006 at 07:49 AM

I wish it was Minneapolis. I have an office all ready for him, if he would ever do that. In fact … does anyone on this list want to be an Interactive Art Director in Minneapolis?

91   Hugh ~ 05 June 2006 at 08:53 AM

Richard,

You want freebies? I’ll put up a 1991 issue of Aldus magazine to the winner.

92   Nic Johnson ~ 05 June 2006 at 08:56 AM

Jackson County :)
Nauvoo :)
Idaho :)

SAN DIEGO!

93   Cooper Mor ~ 05 June 2006 at 01:13 PM

Well, where else do all the great designers live? Maine of course!

94   Paul ~ 05 June 2006 at 05:03 PM

“They said: ‘Californy is the place you wannna be’”.

That’s my guess, after all, you’re a web design rock-star ;)

That’s a long way to go to get away from in-laws though…

95   Jo ~ 06 June 2006 at 05:36 AM

i’m with Veerle on this one, come to Belgium!
We can allways use another (veerle i’m counting you as the other one) A-class webdesigner/blogger.

96   John Cade ~ 06 June 2006 at 09:58 AM

This is by far the most creative way I have seen any blogger to get visitors to come back to their site.

Suspense.

97   ML ~ 06 June 2006 at 05:19 PM

Colorado?

98   Ben ~ 07 June 2006 at 03:39 AM

Welcome to Florida! Don’t forget fans to read Suzanne’s blog “cross-country move” or Cameron’s comment “Suzanne Moll is Cameron’s wife of 6 years and change. A native Floridian, her creative talent runs deep, most notably in painting and stained glass. And hey, she’s got a full two years on Cameron, so you’d be wise to listen up.”

Anyway. Just my nosin’ around

99   Merc ~ 07 June 2006 at 08:28 AM

Here is the link to Suzanne Moll’s blog — My Little Kingdom. It has two clues to the new location: a) it is still in the United States, and b) it is to the east.

100   Baxter ~ 07 June 2006 at 09:36 AM

Suzanne also mentions “cross-country move”, so I’m thinking Florida.

101   Paul ~ 07 June 2006 at 11:46 AM

@ #93 Been there-

Since cameron doesn’t have a comment policy, maybe you should refer to greg storey’s

(Editor’s note: Comment #93 deleted)

102   Kyle Talbott ~ 07 June 2006 at 06:15 PM

Cameron, it’s nice to get this much “love” from your audience, thanks for making the web dialogue interesting.

103   Brandon ~ 07 June 2006 at 11:51 PM

I am guessing that this just shows how many people are intrigued by Caameron on a personal level. Pretty classic responses, since I am #104 - I have to agree with 102. So I will make my guess and move on. You are probably headed west for a quaint little town that starts with C and lots of people adore SJ - not the nearby metro location.

104   Jack ~ 08 June 2006 at 05:47 AM

Hit the road Jack …

105   Hugh ~ 08 June 2006 at 08:57 AM

Looks like Richard hit it.

106   Richard Parsons ~ 08 June 2006 at 09:58 AM

Hey Hugh, although I got it right, I don’t really expect you to sacrifice your 1991 issue of Aldus magazine. I was just kidding about the freebies :) It was nice of you to offer it up on the chopping block though.
